ADSL2 is quicker than Cable (But why??)

I have finally got my ADSL2 connection in place and comparing it to my cable connection.
Here are the following specs of each service, so I can get anyone reading this to explain to me why Im getting far better results now:

Cable: 2500kbps download and 128kbps upload

ADSL: 1500kbps download and 256kbps upload (with 12,000kbps down and 1000kbps up later in the year)

Cable I thought had a cleaner signal as opposed to a telephone line, but here you go.

I was able to host a 3 ways video conference in iChat too, with the video quality so much better. At one stage on a test site I got this : Local connection was 188.6kbps and Remote test site was a staggering 1229.5kbps.
Previous connections were around 85kbps both ways.
